Thought you weren’t eligible for a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card? Check again
May 16, 2023
You might’ve assumed that because you’re not eligible for the Age Pension, you’re not eligible for any government assistance at all. But even if you don’t qualify for the age pension, you may still be entitled to the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card (CSHC).
And if you haven’t been eligible for a CSHC in the past, last years changes to the eligibility requirements mean it might be time to have another look.
What is the card, am I eligible, and how will it benefit me?
The CSHC is available to retirees who miss out on the age pension because of the income test thresholds, yet still satisfy the income thresholds for the CSHC, which are higher.
In the October 2022 budget, the Albanese Government committed to increase the income threshold for the CSHC. Singles earning up to $95,400 are now eligible for a card, up from $90,000. The threshold for couples has jumped from $144,000 to $152,640 (combined), and $190,800 a year for couples separated by illness, respite care or prison. Seniors can add $639.60 to these amounts for each child in their care. There is no assets test for the CSHC.
The card provides cheaper medicines, it encourages doctors to bulk bill Medicare visits for cardholders, and provides refunds of medical expenses beyond what’s covered by Medicare.
Other benefits of the CSHC may include discounts on electricity and gas bills, property and water rates, health care costs, including ambulance, dental and eye care, and public transport fares.
It’s well worth checking to see if you’re eligible for the CSHC now that the income thresholds have increased.
